Are your bakery boxes really grease-proof, and how do you test it?

We run two grease-barrier solutions. The default is a water-based aqueous coating applied in-line on the press, FDA, LFGB and EU 1935/2004 compliant, recyclable in standard paper streams. The alternative is a traditional PE polyethylene film for budget-sensitive brands. Both pass our 60-minute / 70 C oil-soak test without bleed-through. We attach the lab strip to the spec sheet so the buyer sees the actual stained vs unstained sample.

What is the right insert for donuts, cupcakes or macarons?

Donuts: 4 / 6 / 12 holes with windowed lid so the frosting stays in mid-air. Cupcakes: 4 / 6 / 12 cavity rigid inserts; we offer two-piece bases for taller swirl frosting. Macarons: 6 / 12 / 24 cavity inserts with shallow seats sized to the standard 5 cm shell. Brownies and cookies usually need no insert but benefit from a corrugated dust cover. We will recommend based on your most-photographed product.

Do bakery boxes need to be made from food-grade paper?

Yes for any direct-contact application. We use FDA / LFGB compliant SBS, kraft or food-grade clay-coated board on the inner surface. Recycled fibre is allowed only on the outer ply under EU and US food-contact regulations. We deliberately keep food-contact and outer-ply paper from different stocks; the tracking is documented per batch.

Can I get pre-assembled (pre-glued) bakery boxes?

Yes. We pre-glue the bottom seam in our gluing line and ship the box already in 3D shape—the buyer only flips a lid at the counter. Saves about 35 seconds of folding per box on Saturday-morning rush, which matters more than buyers usually realise. The trade-off: pre-assembled boxes consume about 2.4x the freight space versus flat-pack. Most brands choose flat-pack for 90% of inventory plus a small pre-assembled buffer for the busiest weekday mornings.

What window material do you use?

Optical-grade PET (polyethylene terephthalate). It stays crystal clear after a year on the shelf, does not yellow under fluorescent lighting and resists fogging when a cold pastry meets a warm bakery. We deliberately do not use cheaper PVC because it hazes within months. Customers might not know the chemistry; they notice the difference when they open the lid for a photo.

What is the minimum order quantity?

Stock structures (cookie, donut, cupcake boxes on our standard cutting dies) start at 500 pieces with one Pantone or 1,000 pieces with full CMYK print. Custom-tooled structures start at 2,000 pieces because of the cutting die cost. We have run launch batches of 200 pieces for new bakery startups; ask us, we are friendly to small openers.

How long is the lead time?

Pre-production sample with your artwork: 5–7 working days. Bulk production: 12–15 working days for typical jobs, 18–22 days for hot-foil or embossed jobs. Sea freight from Shenzhen: 22–28 days to LA, 26–32 days to Felixstowe, 28–35 days to Sydney. Door-to-door tracking shared on a live link until the box hits your warehouse.

Can I print full colour with my photographs?

Yes. We run Heidelberg offset for high-volume photographic print and HP Indigo digital for short runs and variable data. Standard CMYK is included; spot Pantone, hot foil (gold, silver, copper, holographic, rose-gold), embossing, debossing, soft-touch matte and spot UV are add-ons priced transparently on the PI.

What sizes do you stock?

Cookie boxes: 4x4x2.5, 6x6x2.5, 8x8x3, 10x10x3 inch. Donut boxes: 4-cavity (8x8 inch), 6-cavity (8x12 inch), 12-cavity (12x16 inch). Cupcake boxes: 4, 6, 12 cavity in 4-inch and 5-inch tall variants. Pastry boxes: 6x6x4, 8x8x4, 10x10x4 inch. Cookie tube and treat-bag formats too. Custom dimensions ship with a 7-working-day tooling cycle.

Are kraft bakery boxes really more eco-friendly?

Honest answer: kraft and bleached SBS recycle into the same paper stream once the customer puts the box in curbside recycling. The eco difference between kraft and white SBS is about 4% in the manufacturing carbon footprint—real but small. The bigger eco lever is choosing aqueous coating instead of PE plastic film, which changes whether the box is curbside-recyclable at all. We will tell you which choice actually qualifies for which logo.

Can the boxes survive shipping through the post for online bakery brands?

Yes. For e-commerce bakery shipping we engineer the inner-and-outer pair as one product: a rigid bakery presentation box inside a corrugated mailer with foam or honeycomb cushioning. Our biggest e-commerce bakery client ships 280,000 cookie boxes a year through US courier networks at a 99.4% intact-arrival rate. We can quote both inner and outer in one PI.

What makes Holidaypac different from a trading company?

When you ask for a slightly different cavity layout or a tighter Pantone match on a kraft donut box, the answer comes back from the structural engineer and the press operator—not from a sales translator forwarding emails. About Holidaypac — A Bakery Box Factory With a Brand

The first cookie box

Our first dedicated bakery-box order came in 2010. A retired teacher in Guangzhou had decided to open a small cookie shop after years of baking for her grandchildren. She wanted boxes with a window so the customer could see the cookies, but she did not want them to look like the generic supermarket boxes she had seen for years. We designed a kraft cookie box with a wave-edge die-cut window and a small printed thank-you note inside the lid. The first run was 800 pieces. She sold out in eleven days. Eight years later her shop still uses the same box structure, although the print has been refreshed three times. We tell that story because it explains the way we approach bakery packaging—a box should sell the next dozen cookies, not just protect the current one.

Why a brand-value factory matters for bakeries

Bakery is one of the most relationship-driven retail categories on earth. Customers do not buy bread the way they buy paper towels. They buy a baker. The box is the hand-shake between the baker and the customer's kitchen counter. We treat that hand-shake seriously. When a buyer brings us a bakery brand we ask what the unboxing should sound like (the soft tap of a self-locking lid is different from the cheap snap of a friction-fit). We ask what the inside should reveal (a printed quote? a hand-drawn pattern? a discount code for the next visit?). Then we build a structure that fits the buyer's unit-cost target without surrendering the visual standard. That is the brand-value-factory promise applied to bakery.

Common Bakery Packaging Topics — Answered Honestly

The grease-bleed problem

Butter is the enemy of plain cardboard. A buttery croissant left in an uncoated kraft box for thirty minutes will leave a grease halo on the outer surface that customers immediately read as "cheap". The solution most factories reach for is PE plastic film lamination—cheap and effective but it kills curbside recyclability. Our default is an aqueous water-based coating that runs in-line on our flexo press. It blocks butter migration for at least 60 minutes at 70 C, costs about 1.2 cents per box more than uncoated kraft, and stays in the recycling stream. Smart bakery brands choose this trade-off because the eco logo on the lid is worth more than the 1.2 cents.

The frosting-touches-the-lid problem

The single most common bakery customer complaint, after "the box is greasy", is "the frosting was smeared on the inside of the lid". The fix is a tray insert that lifts the donut, cupcake or pastry above the level of the lid. We engineer 4-, 6-, 9-, 12- and 24-cavity inserts in rigid 1.0–1.4 mm board that holds shape under pressure. For tall buttercream swirls we offer two-piece bases that lift the cupcake an extra 12 mm. The cost is roughly 3 cents per box. The customer-experience uplift is unquantifiable; we ask buyers to trial it for one month.

The pre-assembled question

One of the more interesting decisions in bakery packaging: pre-assembled or flat-pack? Pre-assembled (pre-glued) ships in 3D and saves 35 seconds of counter labour per box; flat-pack consumes about 2.4x less freight space and is much cheaper to ship internationally. The right answer is usually a blend. Most of our bakery clients hold 80–90% of inventory in flat-pack and 10–20% in pre-assembled for the Saturday-morning rush. We can pack both formats in the same shipment without extra fees.

How a Bakery Box Becomes a Brand

The independent-bakery rebrand story

A husband-and-wife bakery in Melbourne came to us in 2023 with a quiet problem. They had been running for nine years on the same plain white cookie boxes. Their bakes had won regional awards. Their packaging looked like everything else in the bread aisle. We worked with them on a custom structure: kraft outer, soft-touch matte lamination, hot-foil rose-gold logo on the lid corner, a hand-illustrated wheat pattern debossed across the lid, and a small signature line printed inside ("Made by the Henrys, with extra butter"). The marginal cost was 11 cents per box. Their average ticket size went up 18% within six months because customers started buying multiple boxes for gifting. The bakery owners told us last spring they had stopped advertising on social media because the boxes were doing the work for them.

Print finishes that earn the bakery premium

Soft-touch matte lamination has dominated premium bakery for the last three years. It feels expensive in the hand and photographs warm on phone cameras. Hot foil stamping (rose-gold and copper most popular for bakery) registers under bakery pendant lighting. Debossed patterns create a tactile detail customers run a thumb over while waiting at the counter—the silent moment that turns a transaction into a memory. We run all four finishes (matte, gloss, soft-touch, spot UV) on the same Heidelberg line, so we can mix them on a single box without batching delays.

Sizes the catalogue does not list

Standard bakery dimensions cover the bulk of the market, but the niches matter. Croissant boxes (long shallow rectangles, often 24x14 cm). Cinnamon-roll boxes (deep square with corner stickers). Macaron towers (5-tier rigid stack with internal cardboard discs). Pavlova boxes (tall round with cake-drum base). Cookie-tube gift packaging. We have run all of these. If your bakery has a structure that does not fit a standard die, we will tool a new one within seven days.

Sustainability for Bakeries That Mean It

The honest conversation

Bakery is one of the few food-retail segments where customers genuinely care about the eco story on the box. We respond to every quote with a question: which of the three claims do you actually want to make? Recycled content (35%, 70% or 100% post-consumer recycled outer ply—food-contact inner must remain virgin). Recyclability (aqueous-coated kraft is curbside-recyclable; PE-laminated kraft is usually not). Compostability (we offer PLA-lined bakery boxes for the eco-positioned brands; PLA is industrially compostable but not curbside-recyclable). We will tell you which logo your spec actually qualifies for, instead of slapping a generic green leaf on the artwork.

FSC and the chain of custody

We are FSC chain-of-custody certified. If your brand carries the FSC label we issue an FSC-tagged invoice for every shipment, traceable through the production records back to the certified mill. About 42% of our bakery-box volume currently runs on FSC kraft or FSC SBS. The premium is roughly 6–8% over non-FSC paper. Most premium-positioned bakery brands consider that worth paying.

Our own footprint

The Shenzhen plant runs 38% of daytime electricity from rooftop solar. We have closed-loop solvent recovery on every offset press capturing 100% of volatile organic compounds. Paper trim is sold to a Guangdong recycling mill. We do not pretend any of this makes bakery packaging carbon-neutral. We do think it makes us a defensible supplier for brands whose customers ask the eco question.

How We Run Your Bakery Box Order

Step 1 — brief and quote (day 0–1)

Send us product type (cookies / donuts / cupcakes / pastry / mix), monthly volume, target unit cost, brand colours and any artwork. Our sales engineer comes back the same day with a structural recommendation, price band and lead time. We will also tell you if your brief is over-spending or under-spending—a 22-cent box for a $3 cookie usually does not make sense, and we will say so.

Step 2 — structural design and 3D mock-up (day 2–4)

Free of charge. Our structural team builds the die-line, our graphic team mocks up the print, and we send a photo-real 3D rendering plus a flat artwork file. You see exactly what your bakery box will look like before any plate is engraved.

Step 3 — printed sample (day 5–7)

A real printed dummy on the actual paper specification. You can put real cookies inside, drive it across town in a hot car, photograph it on your bakery counter and share it with your brand team. We will not move to mass production until you sign off on the dummy.

Step 4 — mass production (day 8–22)

Plates engraved, paper laid up, four-colour offset run, aqueous coating in-line, die-cut, glued, palletised. Daily photo updates from the production line if you ask for them.

Step 5 — QC and shipment (day 22–25)

AQL 2.5 final inspection with a 30-page photo report. Container loaded with corner-protected pallets. ETA tracking shared on a live link until the box hits your dock.

Cafes that sell a small bakery line alongside coffee. Different rules: faster counter throughput, simpler structures, often a co-branded box with the coffee logo on one side and the bakery brand on the other. We have served chains with 30 to 800 stores across Asia, the US and Europe.

Quality Control for Bakery Packaging

What we actually check

Pre-production: paper GSM tested, coating weight measured, moisture content logged, PET window optical clarity inspected, colour drawdown approved against the master swatch. In-line: every 500 sheets the press operator pulls a sample, checks register, density and Delta-E, signs the time-stamped log. Pre-shipment: AQL 2.5 inspection on the finished pallets with a 30-page photo report sent before the container is sealed.

The grease-resistance test

Specific to bakery boxes. We dose 5 ml of warm food oil onto the inner surface, lay the sample flat, leave it for 60 minutes at 70 C, then measure how much (if any) oil has migrated through to the outer surface. A passing batch shows zero outer staining. A failing batch goes back to recoat. We attach the photo evidence to every shipment for clients who ask.

Bakery Box Glossary — The Words Buyers Should Know

SBS, FBB, kraft

SBS is solid bleached sulphate, the bright-white food-grade board most premium bakery boxes use. FBB is folding box board—slightly cheaper, slightly more matte. Kraft is the natural-brown unbleached fibre that defines rustic and eco-positioned bakery brands. We run all three on the same factory floor.

Aqueous, PE, PLA

Aqueous coating is a water-based varnish applied in-line on the press, FDA-compliant and recyclable. PE is polyethylene plastic film laminated onto the kraft—cheaper, blocks grease, complicates recycling. PLA is a corn-based bioplastic film, industrially compostable but more expensive. We run all three.

PET, PVC, OPS

PET is our standard window material—crystal clear and stable. PVC is the cheap alternative that hazes over time. OPS (oriented polystyrene) is occasionally used for cupcake domes; rigid and clear but more brittle than PET.

4 / 6 / 9 / 12 cavity

The number of holes in a donut or cupcake insert. 4-hole boxes are the gifting size. 6-hole is the standard half-dozen. 12-hole is the family size. 9-hole is sometimes used for square-formats and macarons. We tool standard inserts in 1.2 mm rigid board.
